Headlight
Headlights are located at the front of the car and are a vital part of the lighting system. Headlights ensure the driver can drive safely in normal weather and light conditions. The main beam in the headlight provides the driver with better visibility in poor weather and light conditions.
Diagnosing faulty headlight(s)
A headlight can fail, this can be caused by an accident or condensation in the unit. A defective headlight is easy to recognise. However, if you are driving the car, it is not always noticeable. It is therefore important to regularly check that the headlights are still working. There are a number of symptoms that may indicate that the headlight is faulty;
1. Headlight does not illuminate when switched on;
2. Light is dim or flickering;
3. The direction of the light is incorrect;
4. Moisture in the headlight
Do you recognise any of these symptoms? Then investigate what exactly is wrong with your headlight. Is the damage too great? Then you will need to replace it. But which headlight do you need?
Which headlight do I need?
The first step is to determine whether you need a new headlight on the left or right side. To be sure that you are ordering the correct headlight, you can enter your registration number or car model. You will then be shown the entire range for your car. Do you want to give your car a unique, sleeker look? Then you can also opt for a styling headlight. These are sold per set and give your car a unique look.
How do I replace a headlight?
When your headlight is faulty, there could be several issues. In principle, you can check yourself what is actually wrong with your light. You can do this by first checking the housing, is it still intact? Then remove the headlight glass and remove the bulb. If it is blown or broken, it is recommended to replace the bulb.
If your headlight is damaged on the outside, you can see if you can replace only the headlight glass. If your headlight is badly damaged, for example due to an accident, it is recommended to replace the entire headlight unit. To replace the entire unit, you need to follow a few steps:
1. Remove the grille, this will give you easy access to the headlight;
2. Unscrew the mounting bolts;
3. Carefully remove the headlight;
4. Remove the bulb from the bracket and disconnect the cables;
5. Connecting works in reverse order.
Polishing headlights
It is also possible that the headlight has become dull. Often, dull headlights do not pass the MOT because they do not give enough light. If your headlight has become dull, you do not have to replace it immediately. You can choose to polish the headlights with a special headlight polishing kit. With a polishing kit, you can easily make the lights clear again yourself. Polishing dull headlights can save a lot of money. Will you polish the headlights yourself?
