Brake master cylinder

The brake master cylinder is a cast iron piston with springs and rubber cuffs. It's connected to the brake fluid reservoir and the brake booster. The system is a vacuum. When you apply the brakes, the pressure from the pedal on the fluid has to go somewhere. The brake master cylinder distributes this pressure to the front and rear wheels. This pressure pushes the brake calipers into a position where they press the brake pads against the brake discs.

The brake master cylinder itself is made of sturdy cast iron and isn't particularly susceptible to wear and tear. However, the pistons can become seized. If this happens, the entire cylinder will need replacing. It is also possible to repair or overhaul the cylinder. This involves replacing only the springs, rubbers, and other parts that are subject to wear. This is much cheaper than a new brake master cylinder.

Proper maintenance of the brake system prevents the brake master cylinder from rusting. This means changing the brake fluid every 2 years and regularly cleaning your brakes with brake cleaner or a wire brush.
